HubSpot Lifecycle Stages — definition, defaults, and how to customize
Lifecycle stage is the property that tracks where a contact sits in your funnel — from anonymous visitor through customer and beyond. Getting it right is the single most important HubSpot configuration decision.
Lifecycle Stage is a HubSpot property on every Contact that tracks where they sit in your revenue funnel. The defaults were designed for 2014 inbound marketing motions and rarely match a 2026 funnel. Customizing them is the single most leveraged configuration decision in a HubSpot portal.

FAQ
- Can we have more than 10 lifecycle stages?
Technically yes; practically don't. More than 8–10 stages and your team can't remember them, reports become unwieldy.
- What's the difference between lifecycle stage and deal stage?
Lifecycle stage is on the Contact/Company — covers the full journey. Deal stage is on the Deal — covers a specific opportunity.
- Can we use lifecycle stages for B2C / e-commerce?
Yes — and you should customize them heavily. E-commerce stages look like: Visitor → Subscriber → First Purchase → Repeat → Loyal → At-Risk → Churned → Win-Back.
